Rhod Gilbert shares health update after opening up about cancer battle

Rhod Gilbert has shared a health update with fans after undergoing cancer treatment, revealing: “I’m still all clear!”

The Welsh comedian was diagnosed with stage four head and neck cancer in July 2022. He underwent surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy but is now in recovery.

Speaking on The One Show, the star said that he was still under the “wonderful” Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff but revealed he was doing well.

He told the BBC show’s hosts Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas: “Still checks every few weeks, at the moment. I mean, I feel wonderful.

“I have got a lot of issues that I may or may not have for the rest of my life. But who cares? I am here, I am good.

“And every night I am on stage pinching myself that I am doing this. That I am on stage performing now, two years after being diagnosed.”

The comedian is now back on the road with his latest tour, Rhod Gilbert and The Giant Grapefruit.

He said the name of the show was partly a nod to Roald Dahl’s James And The Giant Peach but also “partly a nod to the tumour that was in my neck”.

“And partly this sort of thing of, when life gives you lemons you make lemonade, well this is what to do when life starts throwing grapefruits at you, which is even worse in my opinion!” Gilbert added.

Gilbert said his new show was “happy” and “uplifting”, even though he talks openly about his cancer journey.

He explained: “It’s a stand-up comedy show, I have tried to make it as funny as anything I have ever possibly done. But I am getting, I guess, a lot of cancer patients are coming along. Hands go up and they start coming out of the woodwork, and people start shouting their different… we play cancer bingo some nights.”

“It’s quite dark!” he laughed. “But the reaction is amazing. It’s a conversation people enjoy sharing.”

The star went on: “And laughing, that’s the most important thing. Taking some power back from this wretched disease by laughing at it.”
