In Dallas, newly signed New York Giants linebacker Chauncey Golston played in a 4-3 system but is now moving to a 3-4 system under defensive coordinator Shane Bowen. For some, that adjustment could be challenging but Golston doesn’t believe it will impact him at all.
“Dallas is a four-down but they’re very multiple, too. Under both of the last two coordinators, we ran 4-3, 3-4. I feel that I will be able to pick it up — well, there’s no picking it up. It’s what I’ve already done,” he told reporters on Thursday.
The Giants are multiple as well, but whereas Dallas aligned 4-3 in their base, the Giants align 3-4. And with linebackers Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux penciled in as starters, what might that mean for Golston? Is there a positional preference?
As it turns out, there’s no. He has only a single preference.
“I prefer to be on the field,” Golston said. “Whatever is going to get me out there.”
That could mean putting his hand in the dirt as a defensive end or standing up at linebacker. If he needs to do both in order to see the field, Golston is willing.
“With Burns, Burns is a speed guy. I’m more of the bigger end guy, and finesse, power, those usually go hand in hand. With that, I’m just doing my part,” he said. “I’m just here to help in my part of the role, and with time together, like with the OTAs and training camp, I will see exactly how that works. That question will be answered in time.”
When Golston does see the field, his goal is simple: Dominance.
“It’s a mindset. You get a chance to go and move a man against his own will, you’ve got to do that. That’s a mental thing. Also, you can’t go to jail for it out there. That’s a nice plus,” he said.
The Giants would certainly like to see that.
