The New Orleans Saints acted quickly to bring defensive end Chase Young back on a three-year extension after an underrated first season with the team.
While speaking to the media after the extension was made official, he revealed an interesting note about his last offseason that points to some optimism about this year. Shortly after Young was signed last year, he had to undergo neck surgery. Per ESPN’s Katherine Terrell, the defensive lineman said that he had to “do nothing, like a bump on a log” for three and a half months during recovery.
Perhaps having a full cycle to learn a defense will be the key to unlocking that next level of production that the Saints desperately needed from him a year ago. The 25-year-old was still important to their defense, as he accounted for over a quarter of their pressures, but he was still only able to log 5.5 sacks on the season.
If he can keep generating pressure while also bringing the quarterback down, the $57 million that New Orleans is paying him over his extension will be well worth it. Terrell also added later that Young has invested into remaining healthy by purchasing a $30,000 PEMF machine that is supposed to help with inflammation.
It appears as though the Ohio State product is committed to turning his career around and finally living up to the potential that was promised as a second-overall selection back in 2020.
